FDA announces its plan to sample milk for drug residues

The amount and level of drug residues found in tissue samples of slaughtered cattle has been well documented. Sixty-seven percent of the violations are found in cull dairy cows, and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) would like to know if there is any link to residues in milk produced from those same cows. “We don’t think we have any kind of widespread problem, but we think that the only responsible thing we can do is to test the milk to determine just what residues there are out there,” said Deborah Cera with the Division of Compliance, Center for Veterinary Medicine, FDA.

Calf grower shares lessons learned from automated feeding

Minnie Ward is a regional calf and heifer specialist for FAMO Feeds, Inc. Six years ago, Ward and her husband, Randy, began a calf-raising operation near Rochester, Minnesota. She recently spoke at the Professional Dairy Producers of Wisconsin (PDPW) Calf Care Workshops in Wisconsin, sharing the lessons she’s learned from installing one of the first automated calf feeders in the country.

Web Tools: Dairy producers can be more efficient with SaveEnergy

A collaboration between the Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy and the USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) has yielded a new online tool that connects dairy producers to the resources they need to save energy and, in turn, save money on their operations. “This is a great opportunity to show producers how we are using checkoff dollars to join with other organizations and bring information to the table,” says Dan Rice, a dairy producer from Firth, Nebraska.
