Animals are much more intelligent than most people realize. While cats and dogs know their names, and many dogs will obey certain commands, what about a cow that will carry on a conversation with a person?
A couple days ago, when I was out in the barn feeding the cows, something that happened many years ago came to my mind. I was surprised because I hadn’t thought about it in years. But it brought a smile to my face, and I then realized I had to write about it.
I always look forward to spring after a long, cold, snowy winter. There is something about the longer daylight and the warmth it brings. But what is really good is to see the earth come alive again. It’s wonderful to see the grass and trees green up, along with all the birds coming back from down south.
Sometimes a person can do everything by the book or owner’s manual – and it ends in failure. Such is what happened here last fall when I was chopping corn silage to fill my back silo. We like to have silage in the ration, which we feed to our cattle. They really like it too, and it’s very good for them.
That special day is coming up soon again. That special day to tell your sweetheart you love them and they are very special. That day, of course, is Valentine’s Day.

Christmas 1988 is a Christmas I’ll never forget. It certainly is one of the best ones I’ve ever had. It is such a unique one that every time I think back to it, I can’t help smiling and thanking God for His great goodness to me. This is not your typical Christmas story.
It was in the early 1930s and my grandfather, George Elbert, was finishing up milking the cows and the other barn chores on one particular evening – and dreading what he had to do next.
We bought our farm in 1991, and I learned very quickly that it was impossible to get my crops planted early in the spring. By planting late, it really cut into my crop yields. Back then, I was way in debt and couldn’t do anything about it, though.
