Keeping it real: How real-life images of the farm are making an impact on Facebook

November 19, 2012
Karma Fitzgerald
What started as an assignment for a college internship has turned into an Internet sensation for an Illinois student. Erin Ehnle began her Facebook page “Keeping it Real – Through the Lens of a Farm Girl” last January. At the time, she was one of 15 social media interns on the staff of the Illinois Corn Marketing Board. Ehnle says the interns were in charge of creating positive ag messages for use on social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

Rehder Farms: ‘There is life after dairy’

August 29, 2012
Karma Fitzgerald
Editor’s note: As part of Progressive Dairyman’s 25th anniversary celebration, we’ve checked back in with the producers and businesses we’ve profiled over the years. We profiled Rehder Farms of Cottonwood, Idaho, in March 1990. There are two rows of letters stuck to the door leading from the tank room to the parlor at Rehder Dairy. They read, “Happy Place.” Cows haven’t been milked here in almost a decade, but the Rehder family still loves the dairy business and takes pride in an industry that directed their lives for more than 30 years.

University takes hands-on learning inside its cardboard cow

June 8, 2012
Karma Fitzgerald
Sometimes, pictures just aren’t enough. For several years, staff members at University of California – Davis’ Veterinary Medicine Teaching and Research Center took pictures of vets doing their jobs to area schools and events to show students about the field. But they wanted to do more – so they built a cow – out of cardboard. The cardboard cow, affectionately known as CC, has opened up a new level of “hands-on” learning for youngsters in central California.

May 29, 2012
Karma Fitzgerald
Orly Munzing says she felt a little guilty strolling through her neighbor’s apple orchard. So, one day, she stopped him while he was working on his farm. "I said, 'I’m walking through these beautiful orchards and you do all the work. What can I do to help?'"

Staying out of the fray: How one dairywoman avoids family conflict

May 18, 2012
Karma Fitzgerald
It wasn’t what I expected him to say. About 16 years ago, I was working for a community newspaper and interviewing a couple that had been married for 75 years. I can no longer remember their names, but they changed the way I approached life on a family-owned dairy farm.

Ask the experts: Eliminating bovine tuberculosis

May 17, 2012
Karma Fitzgerald
A century ago, bovine tuberculosis (TB) was responsible for more losses among U.S. farm animals than all other infectious diseases combined. Since state and federal agencies started tracking and eradication procedures in 1917, the disease has mostly been eliminated, but pockets of breakouts throughout the U.S. remain serious and costly for livestock producers. A year ago, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service and Veterinary Services released “Assessment of Pathways for the Introduction and Spread of Mycobacterium bovis in the United States – a study of the condition based on 2009 conditions.” The study found that the biggest risk factors are the importation of cattle into the U.S. – both legal and illegal – and exposure to wildlife.

National MooFest brings farmers and consumers together

May 9, 2012
Karma Fitzgerald
Rita Holt has a farmer’s heart. That’s the secret ingredient to her award winning recipes. Each year for the past several, she’s entered a contest at National MooFest, an Athens, Tennessee, event celebrating the community’s connection to dairy farmers. or scroll down to see more details on MooFest. Twice now, she’s won; once for using dairy products in a recipe and once for her homemade ice cream. She said she and her husband, Dean, used to farm but when she was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, they sold all but a few acres. They still occasionally keep livestock around – a few chickens or a cow, which she spoils rotten.

Ask the experts: Stray voltage legislation

March 29, 2012
Karma Fitzgerald
Iowa’s legislators have put a proposal to regulate stray voltage on hold – at least for the time being. According to an article in the Des Moines Register, the legislation would have set “science-based” standards for addressing stray voltage, which happens when electric currents build up in the ground and can lead to reproductive and other health problems in dairy cattle. While the bills made it through committees on both sides of the Statehouse, the proposals have stalled before making it to the floor in either the House or Senate. Dairy lobbyists claim the bills would make it nearly impossible to seek payment for damages caused by the stray voltage.
