When was the last time you Googled the name of your farm or business? Chances are something appeared in the results. In agriculture circles, you often hear about the importance of online and social media presence in the context of advocacy and connecting with consumers for conversations centered on our food supply.
The California drought may seem a world away for most Americans in the eastern and central parts of the country, but the effects will be felt from coast to coast in 2014. Despite some light rainfall in recent weeks, much of the West Coast has seen an extremely dry winter, which makes many producers fret about the 2014 growing season.
The year 2013 saw abundant moisture for many forage producers, especially in the southeastern states. As I traveled throughout much of the region, many forage stands were lush and green.
Late this summer I had the opportunity to travel across the country with a group of faculty and graduate students from five different universities.
We began in the Carolinas, traveled across Tennessee, then up through Missouri, into Kansas, Oklahoma and eventually Texas.
Our goal was to study grazing lands systems in different environments, and the tour included cow-calf, stocker and dairy operations with conventional and local and/or organic end-points.
