Gus Brackett

Gus Brackett lives and works on his family ranch in Three Creek, Idaho, where they raise cattle, horses and kids (little humans, not little goats). He is married to a saint and they have three wonderful children … and the other one. His family wishes to remain anonymous because they are certain they will be the subject of one of these columns, and they want to see if the column is any good before they put their name on it. The ranch is marginally profitable, so don’t worry about their well-being. He’s not trying to support a family with his writing.

Time is different in the city. City dwellers have watches, clocks and bell towers. We in rural America rely on the sun. If you arrive a second past an agreed-upon time in the city, you are late. If you arrive a second past an agreed-upon time in the country, you will wait on the other person.

The Outside Circle: What’s in a name?

August 5, 2024
Gus Brackett

Have you read the Biblical creation story in the Book of Genesis? My favorite part is the description of Adam in the Garden of Eden. With a lonely Adam firmly ensconced in his garden paradise, God entrusted Adam with one task: name everything that God created.

The Outside Circle: Peeves make poor pets

June 26, 2024
Gus Brackett

A wise man once said, “Peeves make poor pets.” That being said, most of us have pet peeves. Sure, some of us refuse to call our minor annoyances “pet peeves,” but all of us have these minor annoyances.

The Outside Circle: Are you gonna eat that?

June 3, 2024
Gus Brackett

Once I was working at a concession stand when a person ordered a hot dog and then asked, “Are these hot dogs kosher?” “It’s a hot dog! Someone should certainly pray over every hot dog,” is what I thought, but a simple “no” is what I answered.

In 2006, our little community experienced one of these power outage baby booms. The 2006 baby boom left quite a mark on our neighborhood.

The Outside Circle: The act of parturition

March 15, 2024
Gus Brackett

Memorizing the acts of parturition for various animal species is a fun piece of trivia for animal scientists. Horses … Foaling. Cattle … Calving. Sheep … Lambing. These are the obvious ones. Do you know the act of parturition for pigs? Was your answer farrowing?

The Outside Circle: Is that a fact?

March 4, 2024
Gus Brackett

There are millions of ignorant youth that confidently express “facts” about agriculture with the zeal of the town drunk explaining the health benefits of alcohol. Let’s take a look at some of these “facts."

The Outside Circle: The world’s greatest invention

February 1, 2024
Gus Brackett

In agriculture, the greatest invention is very specific to your sector. ... It’s the same thing as a teenage girl saying that men’s deodorant is the world’s greatest invention; a solution to your most poignant problem is the greatest invention.

The Outside Circle: Lies we tell ourselves

January 1, 2024
Gus Brackett

Farming and ranching is the art of selective neglect. If by some miracle you get caught up, there will always be another project. If you’re engaged in an agricultural pursuit, you know the truth in this.
