Efficiency in growing and finishing beef cattle

Every producer is looking for the next edge in efficiency. But are the formulas the industry has relied on for so long the best math for every operation?

Increase milk synthesis efficiency through ration formulation

June 30, 2015
Carl A. Old
Dairy efficiency is a commonly used term and is defined as either milk output per unit of dry matter intake or energy-corrected milk output per unit of dry matter intake. The problem with this measurement is that it is influenced by the energy density of the ration, among other factors.

Update on Nutrient Requirements of Dairy Cattle revision process

November 6, 2014
Carl A. Old

September 11, 2014
Carl A. Old
The American Society of Animal Science and the American Dairy Science Association held their joint annual meeting from July 19 through July 24 in Kansas City, Missouri. Numerous scientific papers on the topic of nutrition were presented and, while many were of interest to our readers, we chose to report on three. In two of these papers, researchers examined the role of dietary starch and its impact on milk production and animal health, and the other dealt with methane production.

Seasonal changes in milk production

September 4, 2014
Carl A. Old
Life is built on cycles; a familiar cycle is that of light and dark. Changes in daylight hours are sent to a portion of the brain, and appropriate metabolic adaptations to those changes are seen as cyclic variations in body composition, hair coat and reproduction. We’ve all seen that in our animals and ourselves, getting a little heavier in the fall and leaning out when spring rolls around.
