Inside every storage structure is an invisible battle between “good” and “bad” microorganisms. If the good guys win, the prize is tons of nutrient-rich silage. How I Work: The road to a successful season

August is the start of my busiest season as a dairy nutritionist with Mycogen Seeds. My job is not just marketing a bag of corn silage seed; I educate dairy producers on how to get the most from silage corn hybrids to improve the profitability of their operations.

From mid-August to March, I’m on dairy farms and in corn silage fields almost every day. I spend nearly 200 days on the road, driving 45,000 miles each year.

But what is “just right?” Forage particle length affects many aspects of rumen function as well as dry matter intake (DMI). Regardless of current milk prices, input costs or other variables, milk production remains a dairy producer’s highest priority, and DMI is fundamental to achieving high milk production.
