As you may remember from a post earlier this year, I had my arm cut open after pregging one too many cows. The joys of surgery and nearly losing my mind being restricted from doing much of anything were enough to make a guy think twice about what he’s doing with his life. 

Five dairy farms across Ontario decided to try something new in 2022 and came out the other side with new strategies for success on their dairies. From new feed mills to new reproductive strategies, each new practice held the key to more milk production.

After a difficult delivery, it is always exciting to have a live calf, but that feeling is quickly dampened when the calf does not suckle or thrive. In the veterinary world, this is called neonatal maladjustment syndrome, commonly referred to as a “dummy calf” or “weak calf.”

They call them the dog days of summer. I always figured it was because a person felt like lying in the shade all day and barking at folks that bothered him, like an old cow dog.
