On July 4, President Donald Trump signed a budget reconciliation bill that brings significant funding to the ag sector. The House of Representatives passed the nearly 900-page bill, nicknamed the One Big Beautiful Bill, on July 3 with 218-214 votes, after the Senate passed the bill on July 1 with a 51-50 vote.

In news relating to dairy farmers in mid-May 2025, the House Ag Committee passes reconciliation bill to cut SNAP and enhance farm safety net programs. Also, the USDA opens CRP enrollment and plans to survey producers in June.

Looking to the future, many dairy producers across the Northeast – especially in New York and Pennsylvania – are capitalizing on positive margins. “A lot of producers in our area of New York are positioning for growth, whether that be herd size, expansion or diversification,” says Tyler Reynolds of Reyncrest Farm, Corfu, New York.

Talk of growth, expansion and new opportunities have historically been quieter in the Southeast than in other regions, but Travis Senn, assistant director of milk marketing and analytics at Southeast Milk Inc. (SMI), says dairy farmers in this region are entering 2025 with a “level of confidence they haven’t had in years.”

The federal government narrowly avoided a shutdown in the wee hours of Dec. 21, 2024, when the American Relief Act of 2025 was signed into law by President Joe Biden. Importantly for the agriculture industry, the act also includes a second extension of the 2018 Farm Bill and $2.5 billion in additional aid that will be distributed through the USDA.

Last week was an abundance of activity to conclude the 118th Congress, as a potential government shutdown loomed over Friday. By the end, an agreement was reached to not only temporarily fund federal operations, but also extend the farm bill.

A short-term budget agreement passed by Congress early Saturday morning averted a government shutdown after a chaotic week in the U.S. House. In the process of passing the three-month agreement to continue funding the federal government until March 14, lawmakers also extended the 2018 farm bill for another full year. The agreement also provides more than $110 billion in disaster relief to areas still recovering from hurricanes, wildfires and floods.
