Hay baled too wet or silage chopped too dry can allow microorganisms on the forage to grow and metabolize rapidly, using plant sugars and oxygen while producing excessive heat. Some heat production is normal in nearly all hay and silage, but when forage temperatures exceed around 125°F, chemical reactions called Maillard reactions can occur.

Sorting out the January cattle and beef market run

It appears that the phenomenal January run of wholesale beef prices may be over. Choice and select boxed beef prices peaked on Jan. 22 at $240.05 per hundredweight (cwt) (choice) and $237.44 per cwt (select). Choice boxed beef dropped back nearly $3 per cwt by Friday with select dropping just over $1 per cwt.

House passes farm bill despite beef industry opposition

Congress moved one major step closer to passing a new farm bill Wednesday as the U.S. House voted 251-166 in favor of a five-year bill that is expected to create $23 billion in savings over the next 10 years, most of it coming from food stamp programs.
