Dairy Challenge Academy helps to prepare students for summer internships, dairy careers

This past April, leaders of the North American Intercollegiate Dairy Challenge launched the inaugural Dairy Challenge Academy to reach more students pursuing dairy careers. While 128 students competed in the 12th annual Dairy Challenge competition, an additional 100 students spent three days honing their dairy evaluation skills. Academy participants are able to do everything that the competing students are doing, including evaluation of a farm's financial, breeding, milk production and nutrition records.

USDA report: Why are Americans drinking less milk?

A new research report from the Economic Research Service of the USDA seeks to understand why most Americans do not consume enough dairy products. Even though cheese consumption is rising, the report said per capita dairy consumption has remained steady at approximately 1.5 cup-equivalents per day for several decades because Americans are progressively drinking less fluid milk.

Equine infectious anemia cases confirmed in Nebraska horses

The Nebraska Department of Agriculture (NDA) has confirmed 12 cases of equine infectious anemia (EIA) in one horse herd located in Northwestern Nebraska. State Veterinarian Dr. Dennis Hughes said EIA affects only horses, mules and donkeys, and is usually fatal to these animals. No other animals or humans can be infected with this disease.

National checkoff leaders this week approved a Cattlemen’s Beef Board (CBB) budget of about $40.7 million for Fiscal 2014, reflecting a 5.6 percent decrease from the Fiscal 2013 amended budget, amid continued tight supplies and an expected slowing of cow slaughter.
