USDA disaster designations in Montana and South Dakota

Bruce Nelson, state executive director for USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) in Montana, announced that Agriculture Secretary Vilsack declared four Montana counties as primary disaster areas and nine as contiguous disaster areas due to disaster designations authorized in Montana and South Dakota.

Documentary shows struggles of Maine co-op

Watching a new documentary about the 2009 plight of a group of Maine dairy farmers was like eating a Tootsie Pop –I kept counting how many licks it would take before getting into the best part of it. "Betting the Farm" details the struggles of fluid milk processing co-op MOO Milk, short for Maine's Own Organic Milk. I saw the movie mentioned on a few blogs after its release earlier this year.

After renovating our parlor and updating its equipment, we invested time with each milking shift to retrain workers on proper milking protocols. Our goal, of course, is better milk quality. We already have quality bonuses, but shortly after the training, we also instituted a “Milker of the Month” award.

What is the most misdiagnosed hoof disease?

In a 2011 article, “Foot rot in dairy cows,” I explained what foot rot is and briefly mentioned the different hoof problems that could be misdiagnosed as foot rot. Lameness seems to be on the rise, and misdiagnosing a problem can often cause a lot of unnecessary grief and expense.

House Agriculture Committee approves $940 billion farm bill, Dairy Security Act intact

In the late hours of Wednesday, May 15, after spending all day in a markup session, the House Agriculture Committee approved a $940 billion farm bill in a 36-10 vote. Nearly 100 amendments were thrown out during the session, many relating to food stamps. The dairy program was the only significant debate related to farm subsidies.
