Codex meetings approve use of ractopramine

MU research identifies method to remove faulty sperm from A.I. process

July 6, 2012
New research from University of Missouri reproductive scientist Peter Sutovsky identifies faulty sperm and takes them out of the A.I. equation. “There are many types of hidden sperm defects that are not obvious and cannot be identified by conventional analysis,” Sutovsky said. “We look at biomarkers to improve our ability to correctly evaluate semen and to give us an idea about fertility of a bull that is used in an artificial insemination program.”

MMPA hosts 75th 4-H/MMPA Milk Marketing Tour

Members and adult leaders of 4-H clubs and FFA chapters from several Michigan counties gathered at Michigan Milk Producers Association (MMPA) headquarters June 27-28 for the 75th Annual 4-H/MMPA Milk Marketing Tour. The two-day conference, co-sponsored by MMPA and Michigan State University Extension, is the longest running 4-H tour in existence with over 4,000 students having participated. The focus of the tour is to educate students about milk marketing principles, as well as the duties and operations of a dairy cooperative.

WLIC launches 'Identifying Wisconsin' branded tag program

The Wisconsin Livestock Identification Consortium (WLIC) has launched the Identifying Wisconsin branded tag program, an independent, industry-funded program dedicated to accurate animal identification and to highlighting the consumer value and quality of Wisconsin livestock. The voluntary official ID program is the first of its kind. It was developed with support from Wisconsin livestock producers and the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP).

Time of day of harvest and impact on nitrate concentration

Summer annuals are often used by cattle producers for summer grazing or harvested for hay. Plants such as Sorghum-Sudan hybrids, Sorgo-Sudan hybrids, Sudan-Sudan hybrids and millets all fall in this category. These summer crops can be very productive and high quality but can also accumulate toxic levels of nitrate when stressed. The heat and dry weather of the past two weeks has caused many of these plants to become very stressed.

Weather and other factors change cattle market outlook

Prices for cattle of all classes and for beef are higher than this time last year. However, cattle market conditions have changed significantly in the past few weeks and most prices have declined recently.  The biggest factor is weather, which is impacting markets directly and indirectly, both in the immediate short run as well as farther down the road.  Beyond weather impacts, beef demand remains a critical question for cattle and beef markets.

Cattle on feed: Where did the placements come from?

July 5, 2012
USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service released the monthly Cattle on Feed report on June 22. As of June 1, 2012, U.S. feedlots with a one-time capacity of 1,000 head or larger had 2 percent more cattle on-feed than a year ago, which was about 1 percent more than anticipated. Just a month earlier (as of May 1st), for the first time in any month during the prior two years the on-feed count was below a year earlier. Several factors bolstered placements of cattle into feedlots during May. The on-feed count also increased due to lower than expected feedlot marketings.
