Farm Bank Performance Report shows increased farm and ranch loans in 2011

The American Bankers Association’s (ABA) annual Farm Bank Performance Report showed that farm lending posted solid growth during 2011. The nation’s 2,185 farm banks increased farm and ranch lending $3.8 billion or 5.6 percent in 2011, for a total outstanding balance of $72.3 billion. "The growth in farm loans shows banks continue to meet the credit needs of both large and small farms and remain the most important supplier of agricultural credit," said John Blanchfield, senior vice president and director of ABA’s Center for Agricultural & Rural Banking.

USDA's Environmental Quality Incentives Program makes a difference for Diamond B

In New Hampshire, USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is helping Meghan Bickford of Diamond B Farm in New Durham implement a number of sustainable practices through the Environmental Quality Incentives Program. With NRCS support, Bickford established a rotational grazing plan for her herd of Belted Galloway and Angus cattle; built a ground gutter and grassed waterway to treat barnyard runoff; and is implementing a forest stand improvement plan.

The byproduct of industry: The West is one of the largest sources of used lumber in the United States. The source: gigantic wooden snow fences. These elaborate wooden snow fence structures provide protection for roadways from the hazards of blowing snow throughout the winter. There are hundreds of miles of these vast wooden structures.
