‘Tis the season – for meetings, that is

February 11, 2012
Karen Lee

Back when I was just a rookie reporter I was introduced to a new phrase – “meeting season.” The established journalist that shared the term with me had been through their fair share of meeting seasons, at least 25, I’d say. At the time, our editorial team was sitting down for one of our semi-annual planning meetings and trying to decide who could go where.

Can you be the hired man again?

February 11, 2012
Elaine Froese
One of the tricks of a great farm succession is the ability of the founder to let go of management and, ultimately, ownership. There are many 60-something and 70-something farm dads on the bald prairie that just don’t know how to change from being the main manager to “the hired man.”

Gene Hall: Climate change to devastate agriculture? I don’t think so.

February 11, 2012
Gene Hall
The following excerpt is from the Texas Farm Bureau’s blog, Texas Agriculture Talks. Author of this post, Gene Hall, is the bureau’s public relations director. Publications Director Mike Barnett also contributes posts. Learn more at: www.texasfarmbureau.org/TxAgTalks We’ve all heard it. We’re only a few short years from climate change devastating agriculture. We used to call this global warming until the earth actually cooled a bit over the last decade. Evaporative cooling cells help cool tunnel-ventilated barns

February 10, 2012
Kevin Kraemer
How to effectively cool cows is an ongoing conversation. One option gaining interest is evaporative cooling with the use of cooling cells. We know cows are most comfortable at temperatures in the range of -5°C to 15°C. However, in summer, it is impossible to get temperatures to this optimum range. What could we gain if we could get it much closer? “I believe the biggest benefit is any time you can drop the temperature in the barn during the warmer months, let’s say when temps reach above 20°C outside, the cows’ dry matter intake will not drop as much,” says Terry Lebold, Lebold Farms LTD.
