Study: Reasons behind Texas’ groundwater table decline

September 4, 2014
Between 1930 and 2010, Texas has experienced a decline in its groundwater table level. A recent study on the trends of the past 80 years by Texas A&M AgriLife Researchers found that while agriculture irrigation is the main reason for this decline, population growth, high clay content soils with shale or claystone type geology and additional acres being covered by highways and parking lots have also had a hand in it.

New drought tool created by UF scientists

According to an article by John Buchanan published by Highlands Today on Aug. 13, 2014, ARID, or Agricultural Reference Index for Drought, is a new drought management tool developed by scientists at the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS). Producers in Florida and Georgia can use this tool to predict drought levels on their farms and plan accordingly.
