Do calves need to socialize?

January 31, 2013
Karen Lee

The common dairy practice is to separate a dairy calf from its dam at birth and place it in individual housing. This helps to protect the calf from pathogens and makes it easy for the calf raiser to monitor, but it limits social contact for the animal.

According to Margit Bak Jensen of Aarhus University in Denmark, early social contact to the dam or social contact to other calves during the milk feeding period has beneficial effects on behaviour and welfare; social contact to other calves also stimulates earlier and larger intakes of solid food.

New for the New Year

December 31, 2012

Back in 2009 when the U.S. was struggling with low milk prices, a camera crew from a local news station stopped by my family’s farm to talk to a dairy producer to see if times were really as tough as everyone said it was.

When the interview was over my dad walked the camera crew around the farm. He showed them the freestall barn and milking parlour. They went to see the baby calves and the heifer barn, and finally he took them past the dry cow barn.

Wisconsin dairy teams up to tackle reproduction

December 31, 2012
Karen Lee
Editor’s note: Names have been omitted to protect the innocent and allow discussion to flow freely within the team. We assure you this is a real farm with real cows, real owners, real team members and real problems. Everyone knows it takes a village to raise a child. It also takes a team to run a dairy. From 30 cows to 30,000 cows, a dairy producer cannot do it alone.

Commodity market graphs of recent years are commonly compared to roller coasters with all of their ups and downs. Much like the feeling of climbing the first big drop of a roller coaster, anyone in agriculture today can be a bit anxious of what will happen next. At the Vita Plus Dairy Summit, Dec. 6 in Merrillville, Indiana, Joe Kerns of Kerns & Associates of Ames, Iowa, tried to calm everyone’s fear of the unknown by explaining what is taking shape in the marketplace.

Dairy producers have been experimenting with harvesting corn as shredlage and snaplage. At the University of Wisconsin – Madison, Randy Shaver has been conducting feeding trials of these feedstuffs to see how they perform in the cow. He shared his results at the Vita Plus Dairy Summit, Dec. 5 in Merrillville, Indiana. Shredlage Currently shredlage processing rolls are only available on Claas choppers. Strategies to improve reproduction in dairy herds

December 10, 2012
Karen Lee

Reproduction is economically important to a dairy herd. If cows don’t reproduce, they won’t become milk producers. Dr. José Santos, a professor at the University of Florida, delved into this vital factor as he reported on research that identified biological impediments to reproductive efficiency and strategies to improve reproduction during a workshop at the Vita Plus Dairy Summit Dec. 5 in Merrillville, Indiana.
