Promoting dairy through social media: ‘It’s not that hard,’ says Shelley Colson

June 6, 2012
Emily Caldwell Gwin
Shelley Colson didn’t grow up on a farm, but when her now-husband, Matt, took her to his family’s 65-cow operation on their first date, she knew she was in for an education. “I had never been around cows – or even on a four-wheeler – before,” she laughs. “I’ve learned a lot over the past few years.” The farm, located in Dry Ridge, Kentucky, is run entirely by family members. Matt’s parents, Dean and Debbie, took over the farm from Dean’s father, Joe. Matt’s brother, Daniel, is taking an off-the-farm job but will continue to help out when he can.

Give cows sure footing for optimal hoof health

May 18, 2012
Emily Caldwell Gwin
A May 8 webinar offered dairy producers advice and reminders about preventing lameness. The hour-and-a-half presentation featured Penn State Extension Veterinarian Ernest Hovingh and Extension Dairy Team member Dan McFarland, an engineer, and explored the relationship between flooring, footing and lameness. “It’s not quite as simple as saying there’s one individual thing that determines whether or not a cow becomes lame,” Hovingh says. “It’s almost always an interaction between a number of different factors.”

Meet your dairy consumer: Laura Fiochetta

May 18, 2012
Emily Caldwell Gwin
HOW WE MET: Laura and I actually haven’t met in person, but we’ve been exchanging emails for about three months. I volunteered to help with alumni communications and fundraising for Alpha Zeta Fraternity, a co-ed, professional agricultural group that I was involved in during my time at Penn State University. With more than a decade of marketing/communications experience, Laura seemed like someone who could give an expert’s opinion on how the dairy industry is performing in the area of public relations.

May 11, 2012
Emily Caldwell Gwin
The New Holland Agriculture equipment company was established in the 1890s and was named for its location: New Holland, Pennsylvania. After much growth and many mergers, the company is now part of CNH and owned by Fiat Industrial. Fiat S.p.A. includes brands such as Jeep, Chrysler and Dodge. New Holland Vice President Abe Hughes said leadership in the company began to recognize a need to “rejuvenate” the New Holland brand name. The company held a media event April 25-26, where more than 20 agricultural print, radio and television outlets were invited to learn about the company’s history and growth. Attendees test-drove some of its newest equipment, including the new T9 Series four-wheel drive tractor with SmartTrax, which reduces soil compaction.
