FMMO modernization: What changes will go into effect in June 2025?

There are multiple changes to the pricing formulas, including changes to make allowances, Class I differentials, milk composition factors, the Class I mover, removing barrel cheese prices from the Class III pricing formulas and provisions for extended shelf life milk.

In November 2024, the USDA released their final decision detailing changes to milk pricing under Federal Milk Marketing Orders (FMMO), most of which goes into effect in June 2025. There are multiple changes to the pricing formulas, including changes to make allowances, Class I differentials, milk composition factors, the Class I mover, removing barrel cheese prices from the Class III pricing formulas and provisions for extended shelf-life milk.

Characteristics of dairy farms with consistently lower costs of production per hundredweight

Lower labor and purchased feed costs per hundredweight are two commonalities between dairies with consistently lower costs of production than their peers.

A project recently funded by the University of Wisconsin’s Dairy Innovation Hub set out to explore patterns of costs of production per hundredweight among Wisconsin dairies, and in particular to explore how well the farms do at managing the costs of production over time given the never-ending challenges.
