The outside circle is an old cowhand reference. As the crew musters first thing in the morning, the cow boss will ask, “Who wants the outside circle?” In any pasture, there will be a far corner that requires a horse and rider to travel farther than the rest. Gus Bracket often volunteers for the outside circle – where there is nothing to distract him from pondering life’s big (and not so big) questions.
My ignorance of sheep herding is surpassed only by my ignorance of
Biblical hermeneutics, but even I know shepherds would not be tending
their sheep in the hills of Bethlehem in the dead of winter … especially
with all that great winter range just to the east.

If mankind’s survival relies on me eating insects, let me be the first to say … it’s been a good run, would the last human turn out the lights, and better luck to the chimpanzees or whoever takes our place at the top of the food chain.
Why does the stock water always fail on the day you leave on a trip? A
day or two earlier and you have enough time to fix it. A day later and
you will talk a hired hand through the fix.
