A dairy farm in Wyoming County, New York, was in the spotlight May 1 as officials cut the ribbon for the grand opening of a manure-to-electrical-power dairy project, Synergy Biogas. The biogas facility at Synergy Dairy produces gas by digesting food and cattle waste -- generating enough power to run about 1,000 homes.

According to WIVB News 4,U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., had pushed the project for government incentives, despite delays in getting the farm hooked up to the electrical grid.

Schumer told WIVB: “By recycling agricultural waste in biogas plants, dairies can reduce disposal costs, produce affordable renewable energy to run their operations and gain a revenue source by selling excess power to the grid.”

New York State Energy Research and Development Authority put in $1 million in incentive funds and National Grid contributed $750,000. PD
