From stress to success: Everyday ways to improve herd health and profitability

The most profitable herds focus on tracking data closely and focusing on creating a consistent, clean and comfortable environment for the cow which introduces the least amount of stress.
April 10, 2026
Megan Abeyta

Recent research from multiple labs suggests some of the most expensive stressors cows experience are the ones we don’t see.

The transition game

Just as a football coach wins by putting the right players into the game at the right time, dairy producers can help cows win by getting the right bacteria into the rumen.
September 19, 2025
Craig J. Louder

We often don’t realize that like the football team, the microbes in the rumen have their own “positions” and responsibilities. The success of the ruminant digestive system is dependent on each microbial team member performing its function.

Build immunity to control hemorrhagic bowel syndrome

Fighting HBS can be an uphill battle. Your best option is prevention; creating resilient animals that can fight off challenges from mycotoxins and pathogens is a critical step toward holding HBS at bay.
February 10, 2025
Joel Pankowski

Hemorrhagic bowel syndrome (HBS) is a silent, confounding killer in dairy herds. It’s particularly stressful because the exact cause of HBS is unknown. There are few symptoms, it often impacts older high-producing cows, and it’s nearly always fatal. Often you don’t know a cow has HBS until it’s too late.

Lipopolysaccharides – The Internally Generated Threat

May 31, 2024

The body has several physical barriers to “outside” threats, the skin, the respiratory linings and the digestive tract. Of these three, the digestive tract faces the most potential threats, not only from what is ingested but also from what develops in situ, through the growth of microorganisms, the toxins some produce and even the remnants of those that die within the tract. Pathogenic bacteria normally exist within the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Common ones include species of Salmonella and E. coli. Both these bacteria are gram-negative (G-), meaning they have cell walls that will not accept that stain. These bacteria can lyse, and their cell walls are broken into segments that contain “endotoxin” made of lipopolysaccharides (LPS).

Rumen upsets: Do they have to be upsetting?

Understanding what cud chewing and normal rumen function looks like can keep cows ruminating at peak efficiency.
May 30, 2024
Gene Gengelbach and Craig J. Louder

If cows could just tell us when they get an upset tummy, maybe we could help them get through the episode without a hitch. Before we can discuss rumen dysfunction, we need to understand what normal rumen function looks like.

How to establish a healthy gut through diet

August 6, 2021
Emma Ohirko
Efficiency is a term that is tossed around a lot in industry circles. Producers want efficient machinery to maximize production, accountants and creditors want efficient operations to ensure profit, nutritionists want efficient cows to signal good health – and so on.

A bug’s life: Cow health depends on it

August 6, 2021
Keith A. Bryan, Randi Lundberg, and Kimberley Morrill
The idea of the gut microbiome having an impact on health is not new. Hippocrates (400 B.C.) stated that, “Death is in the bowels, poor digestion is the origin of all evil.”
