New Kuhn 5640 field cultivator available
Kuhn North America Inc. is pleased to introduce the new 5640 field cultivator. The 5640 model brings new features and sizes, building on the solid performance of the 5635.
New 56-foot and 60-foot sizes are available for large producers looking to use the ever-increasing horsepower of large tractors. The machine has been designed for narrow transport, allowing easy transportation from field to field. In addition, the frame has been designed to optimize strength and weight per foot, ensuring machine performance in wet conditions. Hydraulic positive stop depth control is a standard feature that allows the operator to adjust the depth of each section, independent of the other sections.
Customer favorites have been retained, such as the unique floating hitch design that lifts the gauge wheels off the ground during transport, providing greater machine stability, avoiding the dreaded “castor wobble” of other competitive machines.
The 5640 retains the industry-leading 139-inch depth of frame for handling high volumes of residue and offers a choice of spring or K-Tine mounts fitted with either edge-on or flat shanks, depending on soil and residue conditions. The 24/7 leveling systems offer customers six different configurations of leveling attachments, featuring a new anti-tangle five-row spike tooth harrow and a new optional hydraulic reel lift. These 24/7 leveling attachments allow for continued operation in heavy residue and wet conditions.
The 5640 field cultivator is available ranging from 20 feet, 6 inches to 60 feet, 6 inches real-time kinematic (RTK) working widths.

Chariot Command puts cameras in combines to help stop fires
Nothing makes the rounds in a farm neighborhood faster than an equipment fire.
Those fires – often involving combines and balers – are common and costly as equipment costs rise. Letting farmers know when equipment parts are in danger of heating or failing is the focus of a startup company based in Canada and the U.S.
Chariot Command provides heat-measuring cameras that can be moved to places on equipment and on the farm where there’s interest in measuring heat.
On combines that can include the engine and chopper bearings, the places with the most risk on the machine.
That means farmers could move the cameras off the combines after harvest season and use them on grain bins or other equipment where heat is an issue and could be measured. Monitoring precision equipment to make sure it’s doing its job is another option.
The system uses a thermal and regular camera to monitor different temperatures and what is going on visually, and regions of interest can be monitored. Then a report can be generated that shows how a bearing or hot spot is behaving so that preventative maintenance can be done.
For Class 6 to 8 combines, a sensor is recommended for each chopper bearing and the engine. The company will come and install the system for that price while they are in startup mode.
The future involves attaching the system to a telecommunications module, so alerts can be sent immediately.
