The role of energy and omega-3s in embryo development

December 1, 2021
Douglas Waterman
As dairy cows produce higher and higher volumes of milk, the need for a higher caloric intake is necessary to help support this huge demand for energy. Dairy cow diets typically contain some form of fat, either from rumen-active sources such as cottonseed, distillers, tallow and roasted beans or from rumen-inert fats such as calcium salts or prilled fats.

Methane-reducing feed additives and their effectiveness

November 24, 2021
Caitlyn M. Welty

Climate change, greenhouse gases (GHG) and methane are a few topics we are hearing more and more about in the news today. There has been a global push to reduce methane on farms to minimize GHG effects on the Earth, but it is also a push toward more-efficient animals.

Short-chain fatty acids: A valuable component of milk replacer

September 24, 2021
Carrie Ceh and Mariska Van de Vosse
Young ruminants rely heavily on milk in the early stages of life to provide proteins, energy and essential nutrients to grow and stay healthy.

Milk fatty acid analysis: Status update for field application

May 7, 2021
Mac Campbell
Getting more milkfat has been a constant goal in our industry. Along with milk protein, fat production serves as a main driver for farm financial success and, therefore, has been a targeted topic for genetic improvement, diet formulation and dairy research.

All fatty acids are not alike: Meet oleic acid

January 19, 2021
Essi Evans and Brittany Wood

Two things commonly known about fats are: 1) we can add them to dairy rations to improve the energy in the diet, and 2) too much fat from grains, oilseeds and byproducts, such as dried distillers grains (DDGs), can reduce milkfat production.

Why some fat supplements cause a decrease in dry matter intake

October 30, 2020
Alois F. Kertz

Why are fat supplements fed? Because in early lactation, cows cannot eat enough to meet their increasing milk production energy requirements. Thus, cows go into negative energy balance. This is an issue for especially the first one-third of a lactation. And, this negative energy balance is more pronounced and for a longer period of time for cows beyond their first lactation. Consequently, fat supplements are used to increase energy density of the ration. But, if a fat supplement decreases dry matter intake (DMI), the benefit of using it is decreased.

Research finds value in fatty acid supplementation for fresh cows

October 1, 2020
Jaclyn De Candio

Fat is an integral part of the fresh cow’s ration. Moreover, it is actually the fatty acids, building blocks which constitute the macronutrient, that are important in the ration.

Comparing vegetable meals on protein alone may be costly

September 15, 2020
Essi Evans and Brittany Wood

Selecting the right ingredients to optimize milk production may mean being open to a wider range of choices. There are actually many vegetable protein sources available for feed use.

A tale of two fat studies: Palmitic fatty acid supplementation in early lactation cows

August 24, 2020
Alois F. Kertz

In a previous article, I noted that high-palmitic-fatty-acid (greater than 80%) supplements most often decrease dry matter intake (DMI). And, since many studies with that type supplement have been done with midlactation cows over a short term (21 days), it raises the question as to what would be the response in early lactation cows?

Fatty acid feeding for fresh cows

July 15, 2020
Joseph W. McFadden and J. Eduardo Rico
Enhancing the fat content of lactation diets is a convenient means to raise dietary energy-density and intake, which in turn helps support the heightened energy demands of modern high-producing dairy cows.
