General Mills Inc. wants to take back the market share it lost in the past few years because of competitive companies like Chobani, which, according to a report by Mike Hughlett in Minneapolis’ StarTribune, “turned a niche product into the yogurt category’s dynamo.”

Cattle inventory report shows what happened in 2013

As expected, the annual cattle inventory report confirmed that the U.S. cattle herd continued to liquidate in 2013. The inventory of all cattle and calves was 87.7 million head, down 1.8 percent from one year ago and the smallest total U.S. cattle herd since 1951.

Rabobank calls for structural changes to keep beef industry competitive

Changing consumer preferences and a production model tailored to the production of top-shelf steaks has put the U.S. cattle industry in a position of losing market share to competitive proteins, according to a new report from the Rabobank Food & Agribusiness Research and Advisory group. The report, “Ground Beef Nation,” notes the industry needs to change the way beef is produced in order to remain competitive in the protein market.
