Forage Industry Innovation Award goes to Chris Nykoluk

The Saskatchewan Forage Council (SFC) presented the 2012 Forage Industry Innovation Award to Chris Nykoluk at the SFC Annual Meeting held June 28 near Lestock, Saskatchewan. This award recognizes exemplary innovation, leadership, service and stewardship in Saskatchewan's forage industry.

Nykoluk has been employed with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) since 1991 and recently retired from her position as range management specialist.

New York lawmakers urge USDA to add Greek yogurt to school menus

September 5, 2012
After meeting with Chobani, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and U.S. Representative Richard Hanna announced support for the reclassification of Greek yogurt under the USDA's MyPlate nutrition guide, which requires school lunches to contain fruits, vegetables, dairy, grains and protein. Currently, Greek yogurt is not differentiated from traditional yogurt. The lawmakers pointed out that it has twice the protein of regular yogurt. “Greek yogurt should be a protein option during lunch in our schools,” Senator Gillibrand said.

Smart water use on the farm or ranch

Karl Kupers saw improved water-use efficiency on his 4,400-acre eastern Washington grain farm when he replaced a wheat/fallow system with expanded crop rotations and no-till seeding.

In western Colorado, crop farmer Randy Hines developed a tillage tool that leaves vegetative residue on the soil while creating irrigation furrows in every other 30-inch row. He saved water by using half the typical number of irrigation furrows and saved money through fewer tractor trips across his fields.

Pfizer Animal Health, partners donate more than $1.1 million

September 4, 2012
Pfizer Animal Health, in partnership with veterinarians, animal health suppliers and dealer customers, continues to support youth in agriculture through its Performance Pays spring 2012 program. The spring program raised $1,173,421 to benefit FFA chapters nationwide, the American Association of Bovine Practitioners (AABP) Foundation and, new this year, the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) Foundation. Since its inception in 2008, the support program has raised more than $4.7 million to benefit students through these organizations.

Legal action filed against CDFA for milk price calculations

September 3, 2012
On Aug. 31, legal action was filed in the Superior Court of California – San Bernardino County, stating that the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) failed to follow the law in refusing to bring California’s Class 4b price into better alignment with the prices being paid by cheese manufacturers around the country. The writ was filed on behalf of the Milk Producers Council, Dairy Farmers of America, Security Milk Producers Association and California Dairy Campaign.

All eyes on the Olympics

Like most of the world, I spent most of last month with my eyes on the Olympic games in London. I made a point to watch the sports I love and even spent some time watching those I rarely see or perhaps hadn’t seen before.

What struck me the most were the sports like gymnastic vaulting, diving or short distance track and field events where the athlete has about 30 seconds or less to give it their all.
