June 8, 2012
Ben Yale
“DAIRY VICTORIOUS IN MILK DICTATOR SUIT OF WALLACE” read the headline on October 30, 1940 edition of the Chicago Daily Tribune. The lead says, “The attempts of Henry A. Wallace as secretary of agriculture to force an Illinois dairy to comply with his milk marketing regulations, although it is not engaged in interstate commerce, met defeat yesterday.”

What are your deal breakers?

June 8, 2012
Tom Wall
If I worked at your dairy, what would it take for me to get fired? Normally, most people aren’t going to just come right out and ask you that. But the truth is that’s a real concern for a lot of employees – both the good ones you want to keep and the bad ones on your team flirting with trouble all the time. For the most part, people who are productively paranoid about keeping their job genuinely appreciate it and add value to their work. Ultimately, those are the people you want on your team. But the reality is that not everyone fits that description.

June was Dairy Month

June 8, 2012
Jeffrey Churchwell
Badger State license plates say it all, don’t they? Well, in my milky memory, they certainly did in a small, sedate Wisconsin village because, from the very first to the very last day of every June in honor of “Dairy Month” in Wisconsin, two tiny banks in one torpid town – the Farmers State and the First National – provided gratuitous white and chocolate milk to any man, woman or child who lollygagged into either FDIC-approved savings and loan.

Dairy checkoff speeds efforts to connect farmers, consumers

June 8, 2012
Mollie Waller
Dairy farmers have a long-standing commitment to our nation’s health and wellness, starting with the creation of the National Dairy Council in 1915. In the nearly 100 years since, America’s dairy farmers have told their great story through national and local dairy checkoff organizations. As a result, dairy’s contribution to a healthy diet is widely known and supported by consumers, health professionals, nutrition scientists and others, thereby helping protect and grow consumer confidence and, ultimately, sales. But, just as the dairy checkoff has evolved to meet our changing world, so has the consumers’ mindset and their understanding of how food is produced.

Dave Wilkins
The National Dairy Producers Organization hopes to win over processors, grocers and consumers with a new logo that touts products made entirely in the U.S. The group’s “100 percent USA” seal was trademarked earlier this year, and leaders of the organization are now trying to persuade processors to use it on their products.

Davis Dairy Plant: Providing more than just dairy products

June 8, 2012
Dario Martinez
Although South Dakota State University (SDSU) may be known for its diverse academic offerings and even its Hobo Day celebration, another source of recognition for the university is stemming from the dairy science program’s new dairy processing facility, Davis Dairy Plant. Construction of Davis Dairy Plant, located on SDSU’s campus in Brookings, South Dakota, concluded in the spring of 2011 and is currently producing a variety of dairy products.

Groundwater nitrate workshop looks at agriculture’s impact

June 8, 2012
Cecilia Parsons
A California groundwater study focused on nitrate levels has placed the agriculture industry – and more specifically the dairy industry – in the spotlight. One of the key findings in the study points the finger directly at agriculture. Fertilizers and animal wastes applied to cropland are by far the largest regional sources of nitrate in groundwater, the study said.
