Southwest Oregon Hay Growers Association drafts bylaws

Sarah Dinsdale of Grants Pass, Oregon, is the first president of the Southwest Oregon Hay Growers Association (SWHGA). Dinsdale was elected during an April 16 organizational meeting that was facilitated by Shelby Filley of Oregon State University. In addition, Richard Lounsberry became the new vice president, Jerry May is the secretary and Mel Ashland will serve as treasurer.

Some early-planted corn showing signs of seedling blights

Many eastern Corn Belt fields planted in mid-April when farmers got off to an early start have started to show symptoms of seedling blights. Symptoms include uneven stands, stunted seedlings or reduced plant vigor. They can be caused by a number of scenarios, such as damage from cold temperatures, nutrient deficiencies, herbicide or anhydrous ammonia injury, wireworms or "wet feet," but also could be caused by seedling blights from fungi or fungal-like organisms. "Seedling blights are prevalent when cool, wet soil conditions persist after planting," said Kiersten Wise, an associate professor of plant pathology at Purdue University.

Repurposed corner: Ballasted roofing material

The byproduct of industry: Hundreds of thousands of square feet of commercial buildings have flat roofs. One style of roofing for these flat surfaces is what is called “ballasted” roofing. Yes, ballasted, as in weighed down. A ballasted roof means that the membrane and insulation is not adhered, nailed or stapled down. Rather, it is held in place by a layer of river rock that is several inches thick. So, when it comes to a tear-off, they remove the rock and take up the old roofing materials.

CNN reports: New flavored milk products making an impact in schools

CNN recently investigated how milk consumption dropped nearly 75 percent in high school alone when flavored milk was removed from schools in Cabell County, West Virginia. Now, a new product that has fewer calories and sugar is meeting students' taste preferences and USDA's final rule on school meals. Most importantly, it is helping kids get the nutrients they need.

Red Angus adds Allied Access tag program for crossbreeding systems

The Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) released the new Allied Access marketing program to assist producers utilizing Red Angus in their crossbreeding systems. The new tag program will offer them another option for age and source verification. This is a second-tier to RAAA’s successful Feeder Calf Certification Program (FCCP) that already accommodates USDA age, source and genetic verification for cattle wearing the Red Angus “Yellow Tag.”
