3i Show offers new consumer programs

Western Kansas Manufacturers Association, sponsor of the annual 3i Show, has announced this year's 3i SHOW Consumer Programs.  Mandy Pankratz, with the Dodge City Chamber of Commerce, worked closely with the programming committee co-chairs, Cassie Sanko of the Ford County Extension Office and Sergio Holguin of United Wireless, to develop programs providing information on topics about which requests are most often received by area extension offices.

Princess Kay finalists named in Minnesota This year’s finalists for the title of Princess Kay of the Milky Way have been named. Princess Kay is crowned each year the night before the state fair opens. Twelve young women from dairy farm backgrounds were selected after a three-day event for county dairy princesses held in St. Joseph, Minnesota. The finalists are Kelsey Buss, Valerie Grimm, Victoria Haler, Meg Hintzen, Kirsten Meier, Laura Mesenburg, Kelsey Mussman, Elizabeth Nix, Christine Reitsma, Laura Rosenhammer, Aly Schwartau and Maggie Stiles. —From Midwest Dairy Association news release North Dakota dairy producers to lead AMPI Young Cooperators Mark and Angie Qual, dairy farmers from Lisbon, North Dakota, were elected the 2012 Young Cooperator (YC) chairpersons for Midwest dairy cooperative Associated Milk Producers, Inc. Kansas researcher awarded $250,000 to develop mastitis treatment

A leading researcher at Kansas State University has been awarded $250,000 from the Center for Animal Health Innovation's (CAHI) Proof-of-Concept (PoC) seed funding program. Tonatiuh Melgarejo, DVM, PhD, an associate professor at Kansas State University and the principal investigator, will receive the seed funding to assist in the development of a novel class of natural antibiotics for the treatment of mastitis in dairy cattle. In addition to the financial award, Dr. Melgarejo will receive guidance from CAHI's animal health industry-led board of directors to help bring the technology to market.

Brazil's dairy market predicted to grow by 10 percent a year

Brazil's dairy market is to prove one of the world's most vibrant, growing by nearly 10 percent a year, according to advisers on the spin-off of JBS's Vigor business, whose revenues are to expand at an even quicker rate. Cheese, with growth of 14 percent a year, is to lead the Brazilian dairy boom, although it will still lag the yogurt market, which will grow by 10 percent a year to R$7.33bn, bankers at Banco Bradseco said.

Tulare County dairymen want higher price for whey

If dairy producers don't start getting paid more, the dairy industry in Tulare County could die out, local dairy owners told the Visalia Times-Delta. A hearing with the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) on May 31 and June 1 will determine if the price of whey should go up.
