Beef was the star at the Sun BBQ Fest

Beef was the star during the recent three-day inaugural Sun BBQ Fest at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut. The beef checkoff, through the Northeast Beef Promotion Initiative (NEBPI), provided educational sessions throughout the festival to ensure that beef was given top billings over other proteins, which are typically featured at BBQ festivals. The venue provided the perfect opportunity to educate attendees about selecting and grilling their favorite cuts of beef.

The Wyoming Stock Growers Association (WSGA) presented two awards during the Wyoming Cattle Industry Convention in Jackson. JoAnn Wade was named the Outstanding Range Professional and Dr. Frank Galey was honored as Guardian of the Grasslands. The 2012 Leopold Conservation Award winners, the Sommers Ranch, were also recognized.

Weaning fall-born calves

Many cow/calf operations with fall-born calves will wean the calves in mid- to late-June. Weaning during very hot summer weather is stressful enough to the calves. Therefore any management strategy that can reduce stress to the calves should be utilized. “Fenceline weaning” is such a strategy that should be applied.

Beef wholesale values improving

The Choice boxed beef cutout value was $197.16/cwt. last week, the second highest weekly average this year and only $1.35/cwt. below the early March peak. Choice values have made a strong rebound after dropping to a weekly low of $177.79/cwt. in mid-April. Currently, Choice boxed beef is 13 percent higher than the same time last year. The latest Select boxed beef weekly average was $185.01/cwt., up 10 percent from one year ago at this time.

Merck Animal Health has announced the U.S. approval of ZUPREVO (tildipirosin) – a novel, new macrolide antibiotic for the management of bovine respiratory disease (BRD) that offers excellent combination of effectiveness and convenience. ZUPREVO is indicated for the treatment of BRD associated with Mannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida and Histophilus somni in beef and non-lactating dairy cattle, and for the control of respiratory disease in beef and non-lactating dairy cattle at high risk of developing BRD associated with these bacterial pathogens.

Best month of 2012 for beef exports; April pork exports remain strong

June 11, 2012
April exports of U.S. pork were up slightly in volume (183,618 metric tons) from a year ago and 4 percent higher in value ($509.2 million), keeping 2012 exports ahead of 2011’s record pace. Through the first four months of the year, pork exports stand 6 percent higher than last year in volume (781,676 metric tons) and 16 percent higher in value ($2.17 billion), according to statistics released by the USDA and compiled by the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF). April was the strongest month so far this year for U.S. beef exports, despite a decline of 8 percent in volume (94,734 metric tons) compared to last year. April export value was $469.6 million – 9 percent higher than a year ago.
