Summer pinkeye: A frustrating foe on pasture

Pinkeye remains a frustrating challenge for cow-calf producers as no single control tool is fully reliable. Fly control, vaccination, prompt treatment and veterinary guidance can reduce risk, but outbreaks may still occur.
July 9, 2026
Bruce Derksen

A warm summer day is often a most desirable time on the ranch, especially when a “leisure” trip to check the pastures and cow-calf pairs is on the day’s agenda. But this relaxing trip quickly turns stressful when the first calf we encounter is teary-eyed, followed by another and another.

Overcoming micromanagement

Micromanagement undermines trust, accountability and job satisfaction by restricting employee independence. While oversight is necessary to prevent inconsistency, managers should delegate, clarify priorities, seek feedback and avoid excessive control to improve morale, productivity and engagement.
July 8, 2026
Don Tyler

It is not uncommon to hear family members or employees complain about being micromanaged. Though the intentions of management are to ensure quality, timely and efficient production, their techniques for accomplishing this may leave employees feeling unappreciated, dissatisfied and inadequate.

From winging it to working together: Introducing structure in a family operation

Introducing structure doesn't mean turning a family ranch into a corporation, but it creates enough organization to help the business thrive through growth and generational transition.
July 7, 2026
Rena Striegel

For many cattle operations, "winging it" has worked remarkably well for decades. The founder knew what needed to be done, family members lived nearby, and decisions happened naturally throughout the day. Information was shared in the pickup, at the feedbunk or around the kitchen table.

Rebuilding after the flames: Managing range and herds postwildfire

Fires seem to be affecting cattle country more now than ever before. Being prepared to make the hard decisions can go a long way toward easing recovery, if the need should arise.
July 6, 2026
Greg Eckerle

For ranchers, a fire moving through pasture can feel like total loss – fences down, damaged infrastructure, forage gone and livestock stressed or injured. However, rangeland is resilient, and with a sound recovery plan, most operations can rebuild.

Grazing management in times of drought

Developing an effective grazing plan is no easy feat, especially during drought. But even in the driest years, there are achievable ways for proactive producers to keep both their cattle and pastures healthy.
July 3, 2026
Sam Wyffels

In drought years, grass that once sustained a herd through the grazing season stops growing early, reducing overall biomass production, and water resources begin to tighten. For livestock producers, this period becomes a balancing act between meeting immediate cattle needs and protecting the long-term productivity of the land.

Is your water source canceling out your trace mineral program?

Even a diet well balanced for trace minerals can fall short if cattle cannot properly absorb those nutrients. High iron levels and other antagonists in water sources can interfere with mineral absorption.
July 2, 2026
Chris Ashworth

Most cattle producers first think about feed, forage and mineral supplementation when evaluating herd performance or troubleshooting challenges. Water quality often doesn’t even make the list.

From milk to grain: Rumen development in beef cattle

When cattle get their rumen right early, they handle feed changes better, stay on feed and perform more consistently – especially with key microbes such as Megasphaera elsdenii helping control rumen stability.
July 1, 2026
Mark Corrigan

The rumen is a complex and dynamic organ that converts fibrous forages, starch-rich cereal grains and other feed ingredients, including ethanol byproducts, into high-quality microbial protein and energy-dense volatile fatty acids that support maintenance and growth of the animal.
