Successfully converting tiestall herds to robotic milking

December 11, 2014
Paul Berdell
Over the years, any time I face a client that is 3X-milking conventionally and is looking to transition to robots, I can feel my stress levels rise. From a pure milk-production perspective, this is one of the most challenging transitions because of the many rapid and simultaneous changes the cows will see as they move to the new system.

Mechanics Corner: Fire prevention on the farm

November 24, 2014
Andy Overbay
Fires are awful occurrences; they leave you feeling demoralized and defeated. I submit that they are as bad as any natural disaster. After an earthquake, tornado or flood, there are often widespread calls for assistance and aid. In most cases of natural calamities, groups from across the nation pour in to help people get back to normal or as close as possible given the circumstances. A fire is an individual disaster, singularly devastating and frequently without the public call to help.

Plans halted for North American automatic rotary parlor installation

November 20, 2014
Karen Lee
Earlier this year, Progressive Dairyman announced GEA Farm Technologies planned to install the first-ever automatic rotary parlor in North America. The 72-stall rotary parlor was to be built at Mlsna East Town Dairy in Cashton, Wisconsin, and would have been the largest robotic milking system in place worldwide.

Build a ventilation and cooling system that grows with you

November 6, 2014
Adam Hatton
When building a new facility, it’s tempting to keep up-front ventilation and cooling costs at a minimum. That may seem like a good thing in the short term, but it’s important to consider the long-term cost and benefits of designing a system that goes beyond bare bones and fits your operation’s individual needs, now and as you grow your business.

Building a structure that will last

November 6, 2014
Kenneth Guffey and Dan F. McFarland
Structures that house cattle are vital to the success of a dairy business. It is essential these buildings are able to withstand weather events, have tolerable maintenance costs and contain materials resistant to an interior environment that can be rather aggressive. Buildings need to provide a safe environment for employees and animals, remain in good condition for their functional life, with minimal maintenance, and last (at least) the duration of the loan taken to construct it.

Long Meadow Farm brings fresh life to dairy site

November 6, 2014
Peggy Coffeen
Like a breath of fresh air, the Feldpausch family has brought new life to a two-decade-old Colorado dairy, transforming a dated site into a technologically advanced facility poised for the future. Chuck and Nora Feldpausch, dairy producers originally from Michigan, sought to create a sustainable business model and lifestyle for their young family. After evaluating both green field sites and existing operations, they came across a location near Greeley that met their needs.

Mechanics Corner: Tier 4 Emissions update

November 6, 2014
Gary Wojcik
Emission standards for off-road diesel engines are set in the U.S. by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The first off-highway diesel emissions standards began in 1996 with the implementation of Tier 1. Since then, increasingly aggressive standards have continued to be implemented to limit the amount of pollutants being released into the atmosphere. Tier 4A requirements for the high-horsepower (above 175 HP) engines went into effect in 2011.

Why we chose robots: Cottonwood Ridge Dairy

November 6, 2014
Peggy Coffeen
Earlier this year, South Dakota’s first robotic dairy opened its doors for business, and the Nussbaum family couldn’t be happier with their new milking facility. Brad and Monica Nussbaum have farmed for over three decades near Garretson, South Dakota, just shy of the Minnesota line. As daughters Brittany and Stephanie, both South Dakota State University graduates, showed intentions of returning to the dairy, the family decided to take the next step toward the future.

Conversions add comfort at Nehls Brothers Dairy

October 17, 2014
Peggy Coffeen
Change can be a good thing, especially when it is followed by positive results like increased milk production, reduced culling and longer productive life. Nehls Brothers Dairy, a 1,900-cow operation owned by Greg and Royce Nehls located near Juneau, Wisconsin, is reaping the rewards of a series of cow-comfort improvements including stall renovations, sand bedding and improved footing.
