Using and troubleshooting calf scales efficiently

September 17, 2014
Nicole Turner
Dairymen, veterinarians and nutritionists are increasingly asking for weighing solutions as a way to monitor their heifer growth and efficiency goals. University research suggests heifers should experience 1.8 to 2.2 pounds of gain per day through 150 days of age.

Do producers feed calves differently in hot and cold weather?

September 11, 2014
Walt Cooley
As many as half of all producers who use milk replacer may change the formulation of their feed or the amount they feed as the seasons change. That’s according to recent surveys conducted by Progressive Dairyman. We began asking readers a question about their milk replacer feed formulation practices back in May and continued polling readers throughout the summer. The online question was: Do you change the formulation of the milk or milk replacer fed to your calves as the seasons change?

Calf scale monitors success of feeding program

September 11, 2014
Emily Caldwell Gwin
Mitch Breunig of Mystic Valley Dairy, LLC in Sauk City, Wisconsin, raises 225 calves each year for the 430-cow operation. About 180 of the herd is raised by a heifer grower from age 7 months to about 60 days before calving. Keeping tabs on weights and the growth of the animals has always been an important part of calf rearing on the operation, though the method wasn’t always consistent.

Better colostrum handling could mean another source of income on dairies

September 1, 2014
Emily Caldwell Gwin
For years, dairy educators and researchers have emphasized the importance of getting colostrum into newborn calves. “What’s changed in the last 15 years is that we’re finally seeing dairy producers making colostrum a priority,” says Dr. Jonathan Hess of Hess Vet Service West, based in Hagerman, Idaho. “People understand that if you feed good colostrum to calves, it can have a direct effect on reducing death loss.”

Bovine colostrum: Not just for calves any more

August 22, 2014
Dave Wilkins

6 tips to consider when shopping for colostrum replacement

August 22, 2014
Tom Earleywine
Born without an active immune system to defend against disease, a newborn calf relies on the consumption of colostrum to build immunity. Disease-fighting immunoglobulins (commonly called IgG) in colostrum provide the immune protection newborn calves so desperately need to fight off environmental pathogens and bacteria.

Feeding pasteurized waste milk is nutritious and economical

August 22, 2014
Brent Cousin
As margins become tighter for dairy producers, prioritizing the investment in raising healthy calves can pay large dividends down the road. Professional heifer growers and dairy producers need to pay close attention to rearing costs, especially liquid feed costs, while ensuring calves meet their nutritional needs and performance targets.

When whole milk isn’t enough

August 22, 2014
Julian (Skip) Olson
Nearly half of all dairy calves raised in the U.S. are fed a diet of whole milk in the pre-weaned stage. The source of this nutrition is primarily hospital waste milk, salable milk or a combination of the two. While milk has been deemed “nature’s most perfect food,” and calves have been shown to perform very well on it, we are learning that there are ways we can optimize the consistency and nutritive value of milk fed to calves.

5 truths about raising Jerseys

August 22, 2014
Juan Rodrigo Pedraza and Tracy Vigil
Walking down a row of hutches or pens, they always stand out. First to greet you, full of curiosity, and of course, their brown coats. Jersey calves are gaining popularity across dairy and calf-raising operations in many parts of the country, including where we work in Texas. Much like their Holstein counterparts, the first 60 days are critical to the future of their performance. However, there are important and unique breed characteristics raisers should keep in mind as they work with Jersey calves during these critical early life stages.
