Long-time Holstein enthusiast receives prestigious ‘Obie Award’

September 14, 2010
Cumberland County’s John Cope has been named the winner of the 2010 Obie Award, the top honor of the All-American Dairy Show. Pennsylvania Agriculture Secretary Russell C. Redding will present the award at the show’s “got milk?” banquet on Tuesday, Sept. 21, at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex and Expo Center in Harrisburg. Cope, of Mechanicsburg, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, is a long-time leader in the Pennsylvania dairy industry and the state and national Holstein communities.

Joe Gillespie, DVM, was honored as the 2010 Dairy Quality Center’s Veterinarian of the Year at the American Association of Bovine Practitioners and Academy of Veterinary Consultants joint meeting. Merial, a world-leading animal health company, Duluth, and the Dairy Quality Center (DQC) co-sponsor this annual award, designed to recognize veterinarians who help dairy producers implement quality management practices within their operation.

University of Guelph professor receives Mentor of the Year Award

September 9, 2010
In recognition of his commitment to the animal-health industry and for inspiring others in veterinary medicine, Ken Leslie, D.V.M., M.S., University of Guelph Ontario Veterinary College professor, received the Mentor of the Year Award from the American Association of Bovine Practitioners (AABP) and Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health. The Mentor of the Year Award honors individuals who have dedicated their careers to educating, mentoring and advancing the careers of students in the field of bovine veterinary medicine. Leslie was honored with a commemorative plaque during the AABP annual meeting Aug. 21 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He also received an all-expenses-paid trip to next year’s AABP conference in St. Louis, Missouri.

Larsens, Ferrys selected as MMPA’s Outstanding Young Dairy Cooperators

September 3, 2010
Burke and Lisa Larsen of Scottville, Michigan, were selected as the state winning 2010 Outstanding Young Dairy Cooperators (OYDC). They represented Michigan Milk Producers Association’s (MMPA) District 11 and the Muskegon Local in the annual OYDC conference held Aug. 18-19. Scott and Alissa Ferry of Litchfield, Michigan, were selected as runners-up. They represented Michigan Milk Producers Association’s (MMPA) District 1 and the Hillsdale-Litchfield Local. The Larsens and Ferrys were selected to participate in the program earlier this year by fellow dairy farmers in their district.

2010 Superior Young Dairy Producer Award winners recognized

August 26, 2010
The 2010 Superior Young Dairy Producer Award (SYDPA) program was held Aug. 21 at the Illinois State Fair. Twenty 4-H and/or FFA dairy project members from across the state took part in this educational activity that promotes both personal growth and career skill development for dairy industry youth in Illinois. This three-phase competition awarded each of the top five overall participants with a $1,000 scholarship. The 2010 scholarship recipients include Rick Koehn of Peotone, Haley Lyons of Rockford, Aaron Mitchell of Winnebago, Erik Sheppelman of Bloomington, and Jessica Telgmann of Strasburg.

Three open minutes with Gary Conklin

On July 6, a Union County Grand Jury cleared Gary Conklin, co-owner of Conklin Dairy Cattle Sales LLC in Plain City, Ohio, and others, of allegations of animal abuse brought about by the Mercy for Animals YouTube video release on May 26. Released of all charges, Conklin talked freely with Progressive Dairyman Editor Karen Lee, answering the questions that follow. How were you made aware of the video? CONKLIN: I first learned of the video when a reporter called and asked if I was aware of the video to be released at a later date. They alluded that it would be posted to YouTube in the next 24 hours. I went home and saw it that night on YouTube.
