At Ag Media Summit, held July 23-27 in New Orleans, Louisiana, the Livestock Publications Council awarded the Progressive Dairyman team with first-place honors in “Non-Association Publication” and “Publication Website.” These were two of 54 total categories in the organization’s annual contest.
The Progressive Dairyman team is “honored,” says Managing Editor Walt Cooley.
“Both of these categories are typically very competitive, especially the non-association publication award,” he said. “These awards are the result of a team effort from a highly talented staff.”
To help educate impoverished families in the U.S. about how to farm successfully, and to promote self-sufficiency and fight hunger, Pfizer Animal Health has made a $65,000 contribution to Heifer International – world renowned for its efforts to end poverty and protect the environment.
Merck Animal Health, formerly known as Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health, announced that it has embarked on the expansion of a vaccine manufacturing unit at its Biosciences Center Boxmeer campus in the Netherlands. The $18 million investment will result in a doubling of the capacity of its Tissue Culture Department, one of the departments where antigens for viral and parasitological vaccines are manufactured for international markets.
The new facility, which is scheduled to be fully operational by early 2013, has been designed to operate with optimal efficiency as well as to meet current and future requirements with respect to Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and Safety, Health and Environment (SHE). It will also allow for the anticipated globally growing demand for veterinary vaccines. In addition, the increase of the manufacturing capacity that will be realized anticipates for large-scale emergency production of veterinary vaccines when extensive amounts are needed within a short time period such as during outbreaks of emerging diseases.
Through a $5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture, Mike VandeHaar, animal science professor and Michigan State University (MSU) AgBioResearch faculty member, and his fellow MSU researchers have set goals to increase the efficiency and sustainability of milk production by:
• Educating future leaders, voters and consumers about key practices in dairy husbandry that promote feed efficiency and sustainability.
• Developing a feed-efficiency database on 8,000 genomically characterized Holstein cows.
The Texas AgriLife Extension Service will share a $4.1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture with five other land-grant university extension agencies to address issues associated with climate change and animal agriculture.
One of the main purposes of the grant is “to gather research-based practical information to identify existing and new practices for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from animal feeding operations,” said Dr. Saqib Mukhtar, AgriLife Extension engineer and interim associate department head of the Texas A&M University department of biological and agricultural engineering.
Horizon Organic announced the recipients of the 2011 Horizon Organic Producer Education (HOPE) scholarships, which were established to encourage young people to enter the field of organic agriculture. Each recipient will receive $2,500 toward their education.
“This year marks Horizon’s 20th anniversary, and we’re proud to celebrate 20 years of transitioning farmers to organic; making products that are healthier for families; advancing organic farming practices; and protecting the integrity of the organic seal,” said Mike Ferry, Horizon Organic president. “As more and more consumers seek nutritious food options made without the use of pesticides, added hormones, and antibiotics, the importance of building the next generation of organic dairy leaders is critical. These young men and women are the future of organic agriculture, and we’re proud to be able to help support their education with the HOPE Scholarship.”
