The laws surrounding hiring and firing farm employees are complex, which leads to a great deal of misunderstanding among employers about what they can and should do when in these situations. What type of investigation should an employer conduct into a potential hire?

As I discuss the use of native grasses in forage programs, I often encounter folks who’ve heard native grasses aren’t a practical option because they are “too difficult to manage.” Native grasses like big bluestem, indiangrass and switchgrass are what we refer to as “tall-growing” and, like any tall grass, are more sensitive to overgrazing.

In 2016, National Alfalfa and Forage Alliance created the U.S. Alfalfa Farmer Research Initiative (aka alfalfa checkoff program), whereby participating seed companies voluntarily assessed $1 per bag of alfalfa seed to support public research. We asked some of the seed companies who are participating in the alfalfa checkoff program to tell us why they decided to participate and what reaction they’ve had from producers.
