Cow-calf production as a lifestyle choice

In a recent article put out by the USDA, studies show beef cow-calf production continues to be a lifestyle choice for some farmers. The 2022 USDA Census reported 85% of the total U.S. cattle operations are cow-calf or seedstock, and the majority of these operations are small scale, with 55% having fewer than 20 cows.

Mizzou researchers create the first bovine anaplasmosis vaccine

University of Missouri researchers have created the first-ever vaccine proven to protect cattle from bovine anaplasmosis, a tick-borne cattle disease. The disease infects the red blood cells of cattle and causes millions of dollars in economic losses across the U.S. due to reduced cattle production, treatment costs and animal deaths.

There was no USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) July Cattle report in 2024 providing an estimate of the cattle inventory on July 1. However, the NASS Cattle on Feed report breaks down the number of steers and heifers in feedlots with capacity of 1,000 head or more on July 1.

The August Feed Outlook report shows the 2024-25 U.S. coarse grain production forecast is lowered by 1.1 million tons to 396.4 million. Despite a 1% decline in harvested corn area, yield gains boost corn production prospects by 47 million bushels.

The August World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates report (WASDE) showed larger supplies, lower domestic use, greater exports and smaller ending stocks. Projected beginning stocks for 2024-25 are 10 million bushels lower based on a slightly higher use forecast for 2023-24.

The July Feed Outlook report shows an increase to U.S. corn production to lift the 2024-25 feed grain supply projection. The supply forecast is 449.9 million metric tons this month, up 2.1 million metric tons from the June WASDE forecast.
