The Republic of Senegal, a former French colony that gained its independence in 1960, is the most western country on the African continent. This semi-tropical country has a population of about 16.25 million people and has seen its population increase over 60 percent since the beginning of the 21st century.

After a three-year run when annual U.S. per capita dairy product consumption rose from the year before, 2017 yielded a small decline in overall consumption. The decrease was mostly attributed to a continuing drop in fluid milk consumption.

In the August issue, I reviewed three sources of published data on the status of the dairy industry in Pennsylvania and came away with the understanding that, by all reports (NASS, PAMMB, Federal Milk Market Orders 01, 05, 33), milk cow numbers have barely fluctuated in the state since 2013.

Every year, thousands of farm kids across the country culminate months of hard work and care by taking a cow or calf to a show. This time-honored tradition of preparing an animal for show is an excellent practical lesson in hard work and dedication.

For over a quarter of a century, Rod Stoll has been adding enthusiasm and a game-day feel to the Holstein Association’s national dairy quiz bowl competitions. Serving as a moderator is his way of giving back to the youth program that shaped his career in agriculture.

What started as Kirk Butcher’s dream to form a camp for fellow youth who shared a passion for cows 35 years ago is today an annual event that draws as many as 100 budding dairy enthusiasts for the Southeast Dairy Youth Retreat.
