Many’s the time I’ve come home with yellow paint on my coveralls. Caterpillar yellow – spot it a mile away. We used it to mark our cull cows. Two paint brands we’d borrowed from the sheepherders were dipped in the paint can and daubed on the cow’s rump according to their condition.

Cow numbers heighten milk price downside risk

Global milk production slowdowns have helped provide some price recovery. However, the USDA’s latest milk production report indicates a large jump in U.S. cow numbers. This, combined with large cheese and butter inventories, has heightened the degree of price risk faced by dairy producers, according to Alan Zepp, risk management program manager at Pennsylvania's Center for Dairy Excellence (CDE).

Ohio Heifer Center recycles manure, saves $800,000 on bedding

Not wanting to depend on others to help dispose of the farm’s manure, the Ohio Heifer Center in South Charleston, Ohio, decided to set up a facility to recycle the manure for use directly on-farm. In doing so, it has saved hundreds of thousands of dollars in bedding and is working to market a novel byproduct.
