Time is an extremely valuable commodity in my book. It is limited, and once spent, cannot be regained. Every day I try to use the 1,440 minutes I am given as wisely as possible. I find it is easy to fill my day with the tasks in front of me, such as writing this editorial piece, proofing materials for a conference program, calling in to a meeting or washing dishes at the end of the day.
Ready or not, here he comes. Old Man Winter is moving in for the next few months. We, of course, know this time is coming. As we peel the months off the calendar, it is inevitable that the cold and snow are growing near once again.
If you are active in social media, you have either seen or participated in the challenges to announce the blessings in your life or the things for which you are thankful. These can pop up at any time, but we typically see more of them in the days leading up to Thanksgiving.
Enrolment is complete, the district calendar has been transferred onto the family calendar, and the brand-new backpack is brimming with supplies. These are all signs the school year is about to start.
It’s back … our annual State of the Dairy Industry issue, where we share recently released statistical information and get a glimpse at trends and topics worth noting for the entire industry.
No one likes to make a mistake, do something wrong or get caught up in a bad situation. It can be even worse when it is recorded and put out there for the world to see. Yet as difficult as that can be, I firmly believe there is a lesson, or lessons, to be learned and good that can come from it.
This isn’t the first time I’ve written about speaking up for agriculture, and it most likely won’t be my last. As we continue to see more and more people distancing themselves from farming and at the same time taking a keen interest in how their food is grown and raised, the need for people to speak up about modern-day agriculture continues to grow.
Time and time again I’ve heard dairy producers defend their animal welfare practices by stating “I take good care of my cows so they will take good care of me.” The argument here is that proper animal welfare is good for a dairy producer’s bottom line.
