Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid is promising to act this year on legislation that went nowhere in the last Congress, including a five-year farm bill. In a Jan. 22 speech on the Senate floor, Reid said the Senate would consider a farm bill, as well as other measures that the House didn't pass.
According to theHuffington Post, Reid said he was "cautiously optimistic" that the new Congress will be characterized by cooperation and compromise. In response, National Milk Producers Federation President Jerry Kozak said that the senator's “decision to put the farm bill near the top of the list of things to do in 2013 is good news for America’s dairy farmers, who need leaders in the Senate and House to renew their push this year for a better farm bill."
