The IFCN (International Farm Comparison Network) ran its yearly dairy conference June 16-18 in Asiago, Italy, representing the climax of annual research activities. Under the topic “Development of a sustainable dairy sector,” 45 researchers from Armenia to Uruguay analyzed 2013 dairy sector and farm economics, projecting an outlook through 2014 and beyond.

Global milk output reached 608 million tonnes in 2013, and it kept growing over the first half of 2014 to exceed this amount by 10million tonnesin June. Therefore prices are expected to easesomewhat.

Specific focus has been put on dairy farming in disadvantaged areas, where very interesting growth opportunities will arise, particularly in the EU after the quota system abolition, if jointly leveraging tradition and innovation within appropriate policy frame. PD
