I. Warm-Season perennial grasses (i.e. bermudagrass, bahiagrass, johnsongrass)
II. Warm-season annual grasses (i.e. millets, sorghums, teff)
III. Cool-Season perennial grasses (i.e. tall fescue, orchardgrass)

V. Legume-Grass mixtures (50/50 is ideal)
VI. Alfalfa
VII. Baleage/Haylage (grass-based may contain some legume)

National Photo Contest

Forage Spokesperon Competition
Open to: Producers nominated by an AFGC affiliated council
To nominate, send the following information to AFGC Headquarters, PO Box 867, Berea, KY 40403:
• Spokesperson's name, address and telephone number.
• Nominator's name, address and telephone number.
• Spokesperson's qualifications, including speaking ability, innovation as a producer, participation and leadership in local, state and/or national forage council activities, soundness of farming operation, etc.
• Brief description of the nominee's farming operation.
Deadline: April 9, 2010

Emerging Scientist Competition
Open to: Scientists nominated by an AFGC member. Visit the website for full eligibility requirements.
Selection: Participants will be selected based on the quality of their research and its written summary, their speaking experience, academic achievements, participation in professional activities and the nominator's recommendations. Nominees who are not selected will be encouraged to present their research results during the volunteer papers sessions at the AFGC Annual Conference.
Deadline: Nomination deadline has passed, but the interpretive summaries/paper submissions are due April 2010.

Forage Bowl
Open to: All U.S. colleges and universities
Format of competition: similar to the popular game show "Jeopardy"
Deadline to enter: April 9, 2010

Youth in Grazing Management Essay Contest
Open to: All youth, up to the age of 22 as of January 1, 2010
Subject matter: Anything pertaining to grazing management, including but not limited to:
• Personal experiences in grazing management
• Observation or explanation of grazing practices
• Livestock management on pasture
• Fencing or other equipment related to grazing management
• Plant or animal species response to grazing management
• Any other subject matter related to grazing management

The age categories, word requirement and prize information for the contest are:
Category 1
Under 14 years of age
200 to 400 word essay
1st prize: $100, 2nd prize: $50, 3rd prize: $25

Category 2
14 to 18 years of age
350 to 500 word essay
1st prize: $150, 2nd prize: $100, 3rd prize: $50

Category 3
19 to 22 years of age
800 to 1000 word essay
1st prize: $200, 2nd prize: $125, 3rd prize: $75
