Amid trade negotiations, political changes and a market shift, dairy producers are maintaining a progressive attitude through 2026. Progressive Dairy asked a few frequent authors what questions they are hearing and to summarize the state of the industry in their respective regions.

I might be a little old school or perhaps ignorant, but I’ve been pretty skeptical of AI. However, I must admit – this technology is incredible and it’s here to stay.

AI and robotics will not replace good dairy managers, but they will increasingly reward operations that understand how to integrate data, adopt technology, automate consistently and focus human labor where judgment is crucial.

Every day, new technologies such as artificial intelligence, sensors and data platforms emerge with the promise to increase efficiency and improve the performance of production operations. However, many farmers and ranchers face the dilemma that “just because something is new does not mean it fits my operation,” which complicates decision-making related to the adoption and use of technology on their ranches.

It is no secret that technological improvements are critical to the continued success of agricultural producers. Row crop farmers operating machines with varying levels of sensors have enjoyed watching their progress through the field for decades now, while poultry, swine and dairy producers have access to the capability of numerous robotic systems designed in some cases to automate barn management decisions and lower onsite labor requirements.
