John Herrick, D.V.M., and Jim Jarrett, D.V.M., will be posthumously honored as inductees to the Cattle Production Veterinarian Hall of Fame at the American Association of Bovine Practitioners (AABP) 45th annual conference in Montreal. They will be recognized on Sept. 22 during the Hall of Fame banquet sponsored by Merck Animal Health.

Dr. William Kunkle inducted to Liquid Feed Hall of Fame

Dr. William Kunkle, Ph.D., was posthumously inducted into the American Feed Industry Association’s Liquid Feed Hall of Fame, the highest award offered by the AFIA Liquid Feed Committee and the liquid feed industry. The honor was presented today to Dr. Kunkle’s wife at the 2012 Liquid Feed Symposium Awards Luncheon in Denver, Colorado, by Patrick Whidden and Dr. Chet Fields. The Liquid Feed Symposium is the country’s largest gathering of liquid supplement leaders in manufacturing, nutrition, quality, sales and marketing.

Q&A with Missouri producer Stacey McCallister, who was interviewed by CNN for a story about failing dairy farms. Click here to read CNN's story. How did your interview with CNN come about? I am on the Missouri Dairy Association board and had done an interview for Harvest Public Media, who had found me through Facebook. CNN called our chairmen looking for someone to talk to and since I had just done radio they gave them my name along with a couple of others. I talked to reporters a few times about the story and they decided to go with me.

Wisconsin's dairy innovation center to shut down

September 13, 2012
The Dairy Business Innovation Center in Wisconsin is shutting down at the end of September because it lost federal funding and leaders couldn't find enough money elsewhere to keep it going. The center, which started with a $1 million federal earmark secured by Sen. Herb Kohl (D-Wis.), for the past eight years has contracted with consultants to give dairy plants free or low-cost technical assistance with everything from business plans to equipment purchases.

Studies examine costs for growing alfalfa and oat hay

New studies showing production costs for alfalfa hay and oat hay are now available from the University of California Cooperative Extension. Analysis for each crop is based upon hypothetical farm operations using practices common in the region. Input and reviews were provided by UC Cooperative Extension farm advisors, researchers, growers, farm accountants, pest control advisers, consultants and other agricultural associates.
