Must-know items for generating carbon credits for California’s Cap-and-Trade program

September 19, 2012
David Belcher
California’s Cap-And-Trade Regulation took effect on January 1 this year and marks a significant shift in how carbon credits from dairy digester projects built throughout the U.S. will be generated and sold. We are now moving from selling dairy digester credits in a voluntary U.S. carbon market where business entities or organizations purchase carbon credits for corporate sustainability initiatives and general goodwill to a compliance market where large qualified emitters in California such as utilities, refiners and cement producers must meet their emissions reduction obligations or face financial penalties.

Researchers report on ways to reduce nutrient losses

September 19, 2012
Karen Lee
In an effort to reduce nutrient losses from manure applied to cropland, a number of best management practices have been created. They were crafted using the best available information at the time and, ever since, researchers continue to analyze if they are the best or if they could be better. Three soil scientists were at the North American Manure Expo in Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin, recently to share what they’ve learned about nitrification inhibitors, timing of manure application and type of application to better explain their roles in preventing the loss of nitrogen and phosphorus.

Deflate and inflate tires from the driver’s seat

September 19, 2012
Karen Lee
As crops come off the fields this fall, it will be time to start emptying manure storage and hauling the “black gold” back and forth to the fields. For some, those fields are contiguous to the farm where the tire pressure can be kept low for field use, but others have the challenge of traveling down roads and highways where it helps to have a higher tire pressure.

HERd management: Expo holds special memories for young dairy couple

September 19, 2012
Emily Caldwell Gwin
Editor’s note: Since this is our World Dairy Expo issue, we thought we’d use this HERd management column to catch up with Kim Wilson, who wrote a blog for our Proud to Dairy network in 2010. She shared with us her now-husband Brandon’s creative and romantic marriage proposal at World Dairy Expo that year. Kim says she and Brandon were married on April 21, 2012. Their wedding was held on the border of the Missouri and Oklahoma. Instead of a unity candle, the couple combined soil from his family farm and soil from her family farm.

The Milk House: The geography of a family

September 19, 2012
Ryan Dennis
Our family’s history starts with a pond on top of a hill. It was first dug by my great-grandfather, Claire Dennis, as a watering hole for cattle. He lived and milked there for two years without electricity. Because the milk carts, pulled by horses, would not make the climb, he had to haul his milk over a mile in metal cans every day.

Just dropping by ... Ten Christian principles to consider when voting for president

September 19, 2012
The most important election of our lifetime is fast approaching. Some of us have made our decision and will punch the card for the candidates we have followed on the news networks. We have weighed the pros and cons and, based on what we have seen, are sure we have the right fellow.

MECHANICS CORNER: Are you practicing farm machinery safety?

September 19, 2012
Tracey Renelt
One of the areas we tend to have good intentions about practicing is farm safety, but sometimes our good intentions get set aside. I realize this is not intentional, but we must make an extra effort to not only think about it, but also practice it. How many people do you know that are missing a limb or an appendage, such as a finger, or have had some sort of farm accident? Or even worse yet, have suffered the loss of a loved one? Oftentimes in a rural community such as ours, we can name several people. We do not plan for accidents – we should plan to avoid accidents.

On the Edge of Common Sense: Dog DNA

September 19, 2012
Baxter Black
The Earth recycles naturally. Plants give off oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide. Animals take up oxygen and give off carbon dioxide. Animals eat plants, digest and deposit it as fiber, minerals and nutrients which the plants use to grow. Many examples exist in nature. However, when man steps into the relationship, even for good reason (food, clothing and shelter), he upsets the cycle. He does it knowing there will be consequences. In rural communities where livestock live, we have learned how to handle the huge amounts of “animal waste” that are produced by our cattle and hogs. Farmers have been recycling since Adam discovered that fertilizing his garden made things grow better. It is part of the cycle of nature.

Booths to promote special show offers

September 19, 2012
Check out a sampling of some of the unique booth promotions and educational offerings at this year’s show. Free copies of business book ‘Great by Choice’ Stewart-Peterson Inc. (EH 1605, 1606) is offering copies of Jim Collins’ recent best-seller, “Great by Choice,” to dairy producers who want to broaden their thinking about doing business in uncertain times. The book tells the stories of companies who succeeded – or failed – in chaotic, uncertain environments. At the booth, the financial company will provide a summary of the book and draw parallels to how dairy producers can make good milk and feed pricing decisions despite uncertainty.
