A newborn calf instinctively wants to suckle. The cow’s first feeding is colostrum, and it is vital to his survival. Calves that obtain adequate colostrum soon after birth stay healthier than calves that are slow to suckle or don’t get enough.

As I stepped out at 6 a.m. to get some chores finished before my planned excursion into town that morning, I relished the sight of a clear sky despite the below-freezing temperatures.

I confess to not owning a tractor. I have plenty of friends nearby with tractors. But, in a lapse of good judgment, I borrowed one to brush hog a patch of weeds. Experienced farmers, even 8-year-old farm kids, know you always drive a tractor thumbs up. I didn’t remember.

As the cold weather sets in, so does the realization that calving season is right around the corner. Now is the time to start preparing your calving kit, and one of the most essential items to include is a colostrum supplement or replacer.

USMCA moves forward

After a year of debate and negotiations, the Trump administration and U.S. House Democrats have finally reached an agreement on the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), needed to make it ready for ratification from Congress.
