National beef quality audit reveals trends in beef production, industry

Continued expansion of branded beef programs and cattle herds with black hides are several trends identified in the 2011 National Beef Quality Audit, according to a Texas A&M AgriLife Research meat scientist. Jeff Savell, one of the audit’s principal investigators and holder of the Manny Rosenthal chair in the department of animal science at Texas A&M University, provided an overview of the audit’s findings before faculty members recently.

Climate change could force grazing cuts in West

November 19, 2012
Significant reductions in grazing on public land – in some places outright elimination of the activity – is justified because of the impacts of a warming climate, scientists say in a new report. A large decrease in the amount of grazing allowed on public land managed by the federal Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Forest Service could help offset stress on rangeland in Nevada and across the West that is being worsened by climate change, scientists said in a report released last week.

Bull market runs into some roadblocks

When the Oct. 19 Cattle on Feed Report was released, it showed placements at a 16-year low. Many analysts assume and predict cattle and feeder cattle prices will rally because of the low expected placements. It must be a surprise to those wanting to keep the bull market moving higher that since the report and as of Nov. 5, the December Live Cattle are down over $3.00 per hundredweight (cwt), June 2013 Cattle are down $3.00 per cwt and January feeders are around $5.00 per cwt lower. Angus elects new board members and officers

The American Angus Association announced new members and officers for its board of directors during the 129th Annual Meeting of Delegates in Louisville, Kentucky. Phil Trowbridge of Ghent, New York, was elected president and chairman of the board, succeeding Jarold Callahan of Edmond, Oklahoma. Gordon Stucky of Kingman, Kansas, was chosen by delegates to serve as vice president and vice chairman. Cathy Watkins of Middletown, Indiana, will serve as the 2013 treasurer.
