Groups respond to OCM partnership with HSUS against checkoff

National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) President J.D. Alexander expressed disgust following an announcement that the Organization for Competitive Markets (OCM) has formed a partnership with the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) to destroy more than 25 years of market development and consumer demand building by the Beef Checkoff Program.

Drought's impact on livestock may mean 8 percent food price increase in 2013

The livestock industry is taking a direct hit from this summer’s drought and that will impact consumers’ wallets next year, says a University of Missouri agricultural economist. “I expect to see food inflation, but it will take time,” said Scott Brown, research assistant professor in the MU College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources (CAFNR). “The short term effects will be fairly muted for the remainder of 2012, but we’re going to see food price increases in 2013 and maybe into 2014 because of this drought.”

Forage is key to calf price outlook

August 3, 2012
As of the end of July, USDA-NASS reported 57 percent of the U.S. pasture and range as poor or very poor (the two worst categories and essentially requiring significant supplemental feed or worse). At the same time last year, the massive Southern Plains centered drought resulted in a national poor and very poor rating of about 35 percent. Widespread deterioration in crop and pasture conditions made 2011 the worst U.S. drought since 1988.
