It's the Pitts: All for the golden calf

December 1, 2011
Lee Pitts
I just heard about a Hereford cow in England who gave birth to her second calf in three months. I’m not talking about a twin; I’m referring to a miracle known as “superfecundation.” It sounds dirty to me but it means that a second egg got impregnated a few months after the first, causing another pregnancy at a later stage of development. Being a tightwad, my first thought was, when the vet preg-checked did he charge for one cow or two?

Protein nutrition in finishing diets containing distillers grains

December 1, 2011
Mark Corrigan
Usually when we discuss protein in beef cattle diets, the discussion doesn’t go much further than looking at the crude protein content of the feed and ensuring sufficient non-protein nitrogen and rumen- degradable true protein is available to meet the requirements of the rumen microbes.

November 28, 2011
Clifford Mitchell
Estimates ranging from 650,000 head to nearly 1,000,000 head of cattle have left the drought-stricken states of New Mexico, Texas and Oklahoma. A lack of hay, high transportation costs, low water and a steady cow market, until recently, were all factors in herd reductions or liquidation.

Lallemand releases new micro-cell formulation

November 22, 2011
Lallemand Animal Nutrition, North America, has released a new formulation of MICRO-CELL: Micro-Cell LA 1-Gram. MICRO-CELL LA is a strain of Lactobacillus acidophilus BT-1386 which colonizes the lower gut of beef cattle fed all types of rations and competitively inhibits certain bacterial strains. In a pooled summary of eight feedlot trials calves fed MICRO-CELL LA throughout the feeding period had greater Average Daily Gain +4.2% (P<0.01) and improved Feed Conversion +3.2% (P=0.02) when compared to control calves.  Additionally, in other research, up to 70% fewer calves fed MICRO-CELL LA tested positive for E. coli 0157:H7 in their feces when compared to control calves. Research shows that most health challenges faced by cattle occur during the initial receiving period, and that healthier cattle are more profitable. The strain of L. acidophilus used in MICRO-CELL LA 1 GRAM was selected for its ability to attach to intestinal epithelial cells. The product works particularly well in newly received high stress/high risk cattle, but should be fed for the entire feeding period full performance and pre-harvest intervention benefits. Due to its high concentration, MICRO-CELL LA is a low inclusion feed additive, so follow label directions for use.  *MICRO-CELL LA 1GRAM is currently only available in the US.
